It is the mission of the
Code Enforcement Division of the Department of Planning, Building
and Code Enforcement to work in partnership with the people of San
Jose to promote and maintain a safe and desirable living and working
environment. We help maintain or improve the quality of your community
in three ways:
1. We administer a fair and unbiased enforcement
program to correct violations of municipal codes and land use
2. We work with residents, neighborhood association,
public service agencies and other City of San Jose departments
Empower community self-help programs.
Develop public outreach programs.
Establish community priorities for the enforcement program.
3. We initiate special programs targeted toward
specific problems in San Jose communities.
These programs include:
General Code Enforcement Program
Multiple Housing Inspection Program
LEA - Solidwaste Facility Program
Vacant, Neglected, Dangerous Buildings
Private Property Vehicle Abatement
The Code Enforcement Division enforces regulations related to the following:
Conditions of an existing structure that constitute a clear
and present danger to the public.
Building Code violations (building, plumbing, electrical,
mechanical, etc.), including construction or change of occupancy
San Jose Municipal Housing Code (minimum standards for safe
and sanitary housing).
Zoning Ordinance requirements for structures (such as use,
location, configuration and size) and land use requirements.
Hazardous weeds on private, developed property.
Swimming pool fences.
Signs, including signs in the public right-of-way, failure
to have required permits, illegal inflatable displays, balloons
Inoperable vehicles on private
Blight on private and public properties. (old furniture, car
parts, appliances, etc.)
Early set out of yard trimmings.
Smoking in enclosed public places
